● dhoti nom masculin Vêtement porté par les hindous traditionalistes, constitué par une longue bande d'étoffe drapée autour des hanches et dont un pan, passant entre les jambes, est ramené en arrière et rentré dans la ceinture.

♦ Vêtement traditionnel masculin porté par les Hindous, fait d'une bande de tissu drapée autour des reins dont un pan est passé entre les jambes, remonté en arrière et rentré dans la ceinture. || Brâhmane en dhotî. || Le dhotî se porte plus ou moins long selon les régions. — REM. Exceptionnel, l'emploi au féminin (cit. 2) constitue un réemprunt didactique.
1 Il porte un dhouti (sic) à bande rouge qu'il drape autour de ses jambes et une longue tunique de calicot serrée sur la poitrine.

2 Ces statues ne portent pas de ceinture de hanches (…) La façon de porter la dhotî à hauteur des genoux, maintenue par un nœud à la taille, et les plis latéraux indiqués par des lignes incisées (…) permettraient de dater ce torse du VIe siècle.
